Nigeria: Benue Assembly Fumes Over N43 Million Tricycles

18 December 2013

Makurdi — The Benue State House of Assembly yesterday drilled two commissioners over the purchase of tricycles purportedly meant for rural farmers which were purchased at the cost of N43 million, saying the purchase was unnecessary and irrelevant to farmers' needs.

The 110 tricycles were acquired by the Ministry of Rural Development at the cost of N43 million but the House had disputed the fact the machines were of any useful value to the rural populace in the face of intimidating demands at the grassroots. It then summoned the Commissioner for Rural Development Aondowase Chia and his Finance counterpart, Omadachi Oklobia, to appear before it to explain the purchase, saying the huge amount should have been channelled to building bridges in local environments.
