Nigeria: Fire Guts Mile One Market in Port Harcourt

18 December 2013

Goods worth millions of naira were early yesterday burnt at the popular Mile One market in Port Harcourt. Witnesses said the fire which destroyed all the sections of the market started at about 1.30 am and raged till about 6.30am.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained but witnesses said sabotage could not be ruled out. "We were all sleeping when we heard a loud bang. When we woke up we saw smoke coming out of the market. By the time we got there the whole place was on fire. We called the fire service, they arrived in good time but it took them a very long time to put out the fire because the inferno was very high", a witness said. Our reporter gathered that men of the fire service and NAMA tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire.
