Gambia: Justice Nkea Defers Ex-SG Bah and Co's Judgment

The Special Criminal Court judge, Emmanuel Nkea Tuesday deferred the judgment of the embattled former top government officials to Monday 23rd December 2013. The judgment which was slated for 17th December 2013, could not be delivered as the judge informed the court that the judgment is not ready.

However, the High Court complex was filled with relatives and loved ones as they expected to hear what the law says about the charges leveled against their loved ones. By 9 am the court-room was already filled to capacity and some were wandering around the corridors of the High Court. At 10:40, the Cameroonian-born, High Court judge entered the court room and the clerk called the names of the accused persons and the judge said even though the case was set for judgment, he is not ready with the judgment thus; he would adjourn the case to Monday 23rd December 2013 for the judgment. However, the judge's announcement brought a sighs of relief to many as the crowd could be heard murmuring behind saying 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great). It could be recalled that Lamin Jobarteh, the former attorney general and minister for Justice, Pa Harry Jammeh, the former solicitor general and Dr Njogou Bah, the former head of the Civil Services are facing three criminal counts namely; conspiracy, giving false information and abuse of office. The trio have vehemently denied all the charges level against them.
