Liberia: UN Secretary General's Concern Deserves Attention

The United Nations has expressed trepidation over a number of undesirable activities taking place in West Africa, specifically within the Mano River Union region. The UN believes that these bustles have the tendency to undermine democracy and stifle stability in the West African sub-region.

In A Statement to the Security Council, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, says the security situation in the Mano River basin requires the various governments in the region to address critical domestic issues which are factors that cause instability. He outlined some of the factors as growing socio-economic inequalities, rising level of unemployment, particularly amongst young people, prone to manipulation by extremist elements within the region. The Secretary General warned that if these issues are not addressed by governments in the region, West Africa or the Mano River Union countries could probably witness an increase in political and social tensions.
