Mpanda — A PASSENGER died on the spot while 19 were severely wounded when a minibus they were travelling in from Mlele District to Mpanda Township in Katavi Region veered off the road and overturned several times.
The Katavi Regional Police Commander (RPC), Dhahiri Kidavashari, named the deceased as Berine Bartazal (42) from Mwese Village in Mpanda District in the region and that the road carnage involved the Hino minibus with registration numbers T894 APW .
The ill fated minibus was reported to have been driven buy one Dickson Kinyonto who was still at large as he fled from the scene immediately after the accident.
According to the RPC, the accident occurred on December 17 at around noon in Ilemba Village about three kilometres from Mpanda Township along the Mpanda - Sumbawanga highway .
"The driver of the mini-bus lost control after the left front tire burst before the speeding vehicle veered off the road and eventually overturned. We are still looking for its driver who is still at large as he fled from the scene after the accident," noted Mr Kidavashari.
The RPC named the wounded passengers who have been admitted at the district health facility here in Mpanda Township for treatment whose condition is described to be stable as they are responding to medication as Charles Sokoni ( 25) from Nsemulwa Steeet in Mpanda; George Sengeka ( 48) of Mpimbwe village (Mlele) ; January Damiano ( 38) Kasimba Street (Mpanda) ; Ezekiel Benjamin ( 44) Kashaulili (Mpanda) ; Mpuluku Magobo from Ikingwa and Simoni Bala ( 25) from Kibaoni Village in Mlele District in the region.
Others in the list are ; Paul Clement (28) from Tinde Vilage (Shinyanga Region) ; Lyoba Mengo ( 36 ) from Majimoto vilage (Mlele); police officer with force number E 3170 CPL Albano from the Kibaoni Station Police (Mlele), Selemani Njala ( 62) from Sosayati Village; Magret Cosmas (29) of Usinge village (Mlele); Justine Michael ( 17) resident from Bariadi District in Shinyanga Region; Cristina Gabriel (60) Sitalike village ( Mlele) and Kabura Sahani, from Majimoto- Mpimbwe in Mlele District.
Meanwhile, armed people suspected to be bandits invaded Katisunga Vilage in Mlele District and made away with 740,000/- in cash and several mobile phone handsets worth 450,000/- .
It was further alleged that the suspects were armed with hand made firearms popularly known as 'gobore' which could use SMG's bullets .
The RPC said that the incident occurred on the 15th of this month at around 8pm and the target was M- Pesa shops and that were selling airtime, adding that they fired in the air several times before making it away with the loot.
The RPC confirmed that one Justine Mklowa (21), resident of Makanyagio in Mpanda Township, has been arrested as he was alleged to have driven the suspects to the scene of the incident using a Toyota Hilux with registration number T 800 ARN. Police are searching for other suspects.
