Egypt: Islamist Alliance Officially Announces Referendum Boycott

CAIRO, Dec 22 (Aswat Masriya) The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy and Oppose the Coup, which was formed to support ousted President Mohamed Mursi, has officially announced that it will boycott the upcoming constitutional referendum.

In a press conference on Sunday, the alliance called on Egyptians to boycott the referendum, which is set for mid-January of next year, and denounced the 50-member assembly that wrote the constitution.

The alliance called on Mursi's supporters to hold demonstrations all week to reaffirm that the 2012 constitution is the country's only legitimate constitution.

Egypt's army ousted Mursi in July, following mass demonstrations across the country against his rule, called for early presidential and parliamentary elections and suspended a constitution written by an Islamist-led assembly last year.

The alliance has been organizing demonstrations to denounce the police and army since Mursi's ouster in July.
