Friends of Mandela, a group of scholars and intellectuals, chose the Christmas holiday to reflect on the life and times of the revered freedom fighter and anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela, insisting that current characterization of Mandela as a mere reformist, fits into the narrative of "forces of imperialism."

In a communiqué issued at the end of the group's symposium on Mandela and the unfinished revolution in Africa held last Friday, the group said Africa should not forget that Mandela was more influential in the use of "his skills and strength to ensure justice, fairness and equity to bring about racial and economic justice in South Africa."
