Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala, watched by former President Nelson Mandela and top Hollywood actor Will Smith, brought the curtain down on his 22-year professional boxing career on 3 March 2002 with a seventh-round stoppage win over Juan Herrera to retain his WBU junior flyweight title.
It was a fitting end to an illustrious career that earned Matlala legendary status in South African boxing.
