Tunisia: Towards Codifying Compromise Commission

Bardo — The commission of internal regulations of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) convened, on Tuesday, to prepare the amendments aimed to grant a legally binding nature to the compromise commission on the draft constitution and the results of its works.

According to its President Haytham Ben Belgacem, President of the Congress for the Republic group, this issue needs the amendment of articles 41 and 106 of the internal regulations of the NCA and the presentation in a plenary session of a draft law in this respect.

The compromise commission completed its works on Sunday. Since its creation in July 2013, this structure managed to find agreements between the different political parties represented in the Assembly on disputed points in the draft Constitution. It achieved important consensus, pending the settlement of secondary issues, concurrently with the discussion of the Constitution article by article as of January 3, 2014.

The draft Constitution was elaborated as part of 6 constituent commissions, in addition to the co-ordination and drafting commission and the compromise commission.
