Somalia: Puntland Opposition Candidates Welcome New MPs

Garowe — The opposition candidates who are running for Puntland presidency have voiced welcome support for the selected members of Parliament ahead of 2014 presidential election, Garowe Online reports.

Addressing the media members in Puntland capital of Garowe on Tuesday, Ali Abdi Aware said that he is satisfied with the outcome of the parliamentary selection process, commending vetting and conflict resolution committee members for carrying out their work effectively during the screening phase.

"I would like to congratulate the new parliamentarians on their nomination and I am very hopeful that they will work for the common good," added Aware.

Meanwhile, presidential contender Mohamed Abdi Nour declared that the opposition candidates will contest in the forthcoming election.

Puntland Election's vetting and conflict resolution committee Monday evening revealed a line-up consisting of 66 lawmakers who have been set to choose a new speaker on 1st of January 2014 and pick a new president on January 8,2014.

Puntland, on Somalia northeastern tip prepares for the most hotly contested presidential election, with the incumbent president Abdirahman Mohamed Farole vying for second term in office against a number of rival contenders including former Transitional Federal Government of Somalia's Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas.
