Tanzania: Seven Killed, Two Injured On New Year's Eve

SEVEN people died as two others sustained serious injuries in separate incidents which occurred in three regions of Mbeya, Njombe and Dar es Salaam on New Year's Eve, police have said.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander (RPC), Ahmed Msangi, said by phone that in the first incident a motorcycle taxi operator was knocked to death while his passenger sustained serious injuries along Mbeya- Njombe Highway in Iyunga area in Mbeya region on Tuesday.

He said the motorcyclist, who was identified as Joseph Songa (32), met his death when a Toyota Duet car with registration number T 937 AUT rammed the motorcycle, whose registration number was yet to be established.

"The passenger, Leonard Msigwa (22), a resident of Tunduma, was taken to Mbeya Regional Hospital for treatment after he was seriously wounded as the deceased's body was preserved at the same hospital," he said.

RPC Msangi said the same car went to hit another motorcyclist, Baraka Mwakatapa (30), who also sustained injuries, adding that the car driver, whose identity was yet to be established, ran away after the two accidents.

"We have embarked on a manhunt for the hit-and-run driver on suspicion of causing the accidents owing to reckless driving," said the RPC.

In another incident, the dead body of a man whose identity is yet to be established aged between 35 and 37 years, was found at Makambako in Mji Mwema township in Njombe region on Tuesday.

According to Njombe Regional Police Commander (RPC), Fulgence Ngonyani, the body bore multiple wounds and the suspected assailants used a sharp object to stab the man to death.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that the man was lynched by a mob after he was suspected of stealing bicycles," he said, adding, "Beside the body was a bicycle believed to have been stolen," he said.

He said the police were still investigating the matter to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing, saying the body was taken to Makambako Hospital mortuary for preservation pending collection by relatives.

Meanwhile, four people died in separate road accidents on New Year's Eve in Dar es Salaam region.

Ilala RPC, Marietha Minangi, said a bodaboda rider identified as Petu, died while his passenger sustained injuries after they were hit by a Toyota Corolla car along Pugu road.
