Tanzania Seizes Container of Elephant Tusks

Customs officials at the Dar es Salaam Port seized a container of ivory tusks on Wednesday, but officials declined to give details on the size, worth or destination of the haul, Tanzania's The Guardian reported Friday (January 3rd).

Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) acting Director General Madeni Kipande said the container was seized late Wednesday after a tipoff.

"We impounded the tusks in a container that was to be shipped. However I am not in a position to give details," Kipande said.

Deputy Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Lazaro Nyalandu confirmed the seizure, but also said he could not provide further details until ministry officials had examined the haul.

The seizure comes a day after President Jakaya Kikwete announced the resumption of the government's controversial anti-poaching operations.
