Somalia: Puntland Parliament Elects New Speaker

The 66 Members of the new Parliament of Puntland have today elected a new speaker in a highly contested election. Mr Said Hassan Shire was elected as the new parliament out of five candidates running for the position. Mr Shire has defeated 40 votes against Abdirashid Hersi who only received 26 votes in the third round of the voting.
The new Puntland Parliament Speaker Said Hassan Shire has today started to chair the parliament's first session as the parliament is getting prepared to elect the new president of the state on January 8th.
More than 20 candidates including the current president Abdurahman Farole whose term in office recently ended have officially announced that they will be running for the region's presidential election at the end of this week.
