Kenya: Debra Sanaipei and Michael Okwiri Call Off Wedding

The much anticipated celebrity wedding of the year between Airtel's Michael Okwiri and former beauty queen Debra Sanaipei has been called off due to "a mutual understanding between the couple".

A close friend of the two told Word Is: "The couple came to the decision after lengthy discussions and decided to call off the wedding."

The source continued: "Sanaipei's increasing professional and business obligations outside the country and Mike's continued commitments in the country led to the couple's decision to call off the wedding but they continue to be close friends."

Sanaipei came to the limelight after she won the Miss Tourism Kenya and Miss Tourism Africa crowns in 2001. She is the daughter of former Narok North MP William ole Ntimama.

Okwiri is Airtel's Africa head of corporate communications. Before his appointment, Okwiri was the corporate communications director at Zain Kenya.

The invites-only wedding was expected to be held "early this year".

Word Is was first to break the news of the planned nuptials. Our source had said then, "Mike and Sanaipei feel strongly for each other and their impending nuptials is not for show."
