Kenya: Ruto to Meet South Rift Leaders in Kericho

DEPUTY President William Ruto is this morning expected in Kericho county. His tour is seen as an attempt to appease the Kipsigis community after an uproar over state jobs distribution.

A top official in the Office of the Deputy President said Ruto is expected to preside over the opening of Kipsigis Teachers Sacco, which has rebranded to Imarisha Sacco Society Ltd. Ruto will also meet with South Rift leaders. "Ruto will be heading to Kericho to open a teachers Sacco. Leaders from that region are expected to accompany him," said the source, who did not want to be named.

The meeting comes almost a month after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the region to calm anxiety between TNA and URP supporters. Last week, Uhuru appointed two individuals from the Kalenjin community in Kericho to head the National Housing Corporation (Samuel Poghisio) and Nyayo Tea Zone.

Yesterday, Ainamoi MP Benjamin Langat asked the Kipsigis community to be patient with the Jubilee government saying more people from the region will be appointed. "The leaders you have elected will ensure the community's interest are safeguarded," he said.
