Kenya: Money for Girls in Bank - MP

The money donated by Deputy President William Ruto to build a rescue centre for girls in Mt Elgon is safe in bank accounts, Mt Elgon MP John Serut has said. Speaking to the press in Eldoret town yesterday, Serut said the money has not been misappropriated as claimed by a section of leaders and educationists in the area.

He said Ruto gave him Sh1 million at a function in the area last August and he banked the money in an account opened by professionals in the area, who are planning the establishment of the rescue centre.

"I am not a signatory to the bank account and there is no way I could have accessed the money although I am the one who banked it," Serut said. Ruto gave the money after revelations that 12 young girls at Chepkurkur Primary School have been impregnated by unknown people.
