BY THE time of penning this opinion piece, youth unemployment is said to be 48.2%. This statistic alone speaks volumes as youth unemployment haunts the young from Okanghudi in the north to Köes in the south. As a youth myself, I can only sympathise and share their despair.
Why are so many young people unemployed? It is obviously not a matter of choice but of circumstance. It appears that no matter what skills and knowledge young people possess, they are excluded from the labour market by a system that puts them on contracts, or a lack of demand, meaning that companies will not recruit anyone at all (regardless of their skills).
