Gambia: Jalikunda to Stage Concert

JaliKunda (join griots) will on Saturday 11 January stage its second musical concert at the Alliance Francaise Gambia, along the Kairaba Avenue. The initiative is geared towards presenting their culture, by mixing traditional and modern Mandinka. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer, Lamina Jobarteh, alias Boraba, the secretary-general of JaliKunda, said they had conceived the initiative, and last year staged the first musical concert. He explained that JaliKunda comprises a group of Gambian artists from griot background, meant to promote traditional music (Jalia) and foster unity among upcoming griots and artists. "It is all geared towards empowering the youths with musical facilities and knowledge to contribute to the development of our community," he told the Daily Observer reporter.

Jobarteh called on Gambians to support the occasion, saying that it belongs to all Gambians. He disclosed that some of the griots to perform on that night include Funna Kuyateh of Wuli Band, Mama Jalo renowned griot, Sambou Suso, Sherrifo Kanuteh, Musa Joberteh of Mama Africa Band Barik Kanuteh, Mariam Suso (Miss Ma), Jali Musa Joberteh among others. "The concert will be an annual event and am calling on Gambians to come out in their large numbers to support Gambians music," he said.
