Kenyan Politician Survives 'Assassination Attempt'

Moses Wetangula, senator-elect for Bungoma County, escaped unhurt Thursday (January 9th) when unknown gunmen fired shots at his car in Nairobi, Kenya's Daily Nation reported.

Wetangula was driving to his home in Karen from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when several gunshots were fired from a car parked across the road on Mbagathi Way.

He recorded a statement at the Kilimani police station after the incident, accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his spokesman Maseme Machuka.

"I take this as an assassination attempt. The police have to move with speed and open an investigation into the matter," Wetangula said.

Nairobi County Police Chief Benson Kibue told Capital FM that police would investigate the incident.

"We are not taking the matter lightly, our offices are doing everything possible to ensure we get the attackers," he said.
