Tanzania: Accidents Claim Lives of Residents

THREE people died including a pedestrian in three separate road accidents which occurred on Thursday in Dar es Salaam, police have confirmed.

In the first incident, a man identified as Godlizen Munisi (32) was knocked down by a lorry while crossing the road at Mbezi Msakuzi area in Kinondoni.

The registration number of the lorry was not noted. According to the Regional Police Commander (RPC) of Kinondoni, Camilius Wambura, the man was seriously injured on the head and died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the lorry drove off immediately after the accident.

"The body of the deceased was taken to Tumbi Hospital mortuary in Coast Region for preservation. The police are looking for the driver who caused the accident," he said.

In another incident, a motorcyclist identified as Said Shaban (34) died in a road accident that occurred at Mabibo/Luhanga near Loyola Secondary School in Kinondoni municipality.

The RPC said the accident involved a Scania truck with registration number T 463 AGA, which hit a motor cycle with registration number T 249 CMM carrying a woman who was not identified. The passenger was injured and was rushed to Sinza-Palestina Hospital for treatment.

"The motorbike rider was heading to Mabibo from Kigogo area before he collided with the lorry, that caused his death leaving the passenger seriously wounded," he said.

He further added that the police are looking for the driver who escaped after the incident and the body of the deceased was taken to Amana Hospital mortuary for preservation as burial arrangements were underway.

In the third incident for the day, an unidentified motorcyclist died on the spot and two men identified as Gasper Laban and Ramadhani were seriously injured in a road accident which occurred along Nyerere Road at Kiwalani area in Ilala municipality.

According to the Regional Police Commander (RPC) of Ilala, Ms Marietha Minangi, the accident involved a Noah van that hit a motorcyclist before a Toyota DCM bus with registration number T 895 BJS T/ DCM ran over him. He died on the spot and the passengers sustained injuries.

"The wounded were rushed to Amana Hospital and the body of the deceased was taken to Amana Hospital mortuary for preservation," he said, adding that the police were looking for the driver of the Noah van who escaped shortly after the accident.
