Tanzania: TIC, Mtwara RC Office to Work Together

Mtwara — TANZANIA Investment Centre (TIC) will foster closer working relations with Mtwara Regional Commissioner's office to promote and facilitate investments to the region.

The pledge was given by the TIC's Executive Director, Ms Juliet Kairuki during her trip to the region at the weekend where she paid a courtesy call to the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Joseph Simbakalia.

She briefed him and other officials on the status of investments in Mtwara Region based on projects that have been registered at TIC.

The TIC boss also used the opportunity to propose cooperation approaches to address challenges being experienced by investors and Government including those associated with land and tax.

"One way of attaining success is through strengthening cooperation between the two sides and building capacity for officials from the RC's office to enable them play a more positive role in promoting and facilitating investments in Mtwara Region," Ms Kairuki said.

Ms Kairuki commended the RC and his team for their efforts to make Mtwara an attractive destination for investments especially on the town planning front.

During her visit she met with other government institutions such as Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Ministry of Lands, the Prisons and the private sector.

"Mtwara offers significant investment opportunities and efforts should be made to zoom on facilitating more investment in manufacturing and real estate development.

"These sectors are the leaders in performance based on TIC registered projects and play a significant role in contributing to local economic empowerment and employment creation," she said.

Ms Kairuki also said it was necessary that land was allocated for people who want to invest in that region. The Tanzania Investment Act limits TICs involvement in oil and gas projects.

She commended the government for the efforts taken in allocating land for investors and gave an example of a 110 hectors of Mtwara Freeport zone that were allocated by the government for investment purposes.

She noted that TIC is working closely with the Ministry of Lands currently to prepare derivative titles and arranging for necessary infrastructure for investment areas with the aim of attracting more investors in the country.

At present there are four derivative titles registered with TIC for the Mtwara region these include Dangote and Olam Industries.
