Ethiopia Establishes WTO National Enquiry Point
14 January 2014
As part of its accession process to the World Trade Organization, Ethiopia has established a National Enquiry Point in the Ethiopian Standards Authority. The Enquiry Point will serve as a platform to provide information and updates on Ethiopia's technical regulations, test procedures and compliance to the international standards agreed by member states.
This facility is required under WTO rules to ensure that non-tariff measures such as technical standards and certification procedures do not pose a barrier to trade. The Enquiry Point will provide services to clarify the country's trade-related legal regime and traded products to external actors. It will also offer advice and information to Ethiopian exporters on issues related to compliance measures in export markets. Ethiopia has submitted its goods' offer to the WTO and is currently finalizing its responses to individual queries on this from a number of countries.
