Gambia: Editor Sheriff and Journalist Marenah to Be Arraigned Today

Reports have it that Mr. Musa Sheriff, editor in Chief of The Voice Newspaper and Mr. Sainey Marenah, a freelance reporter were arrested, detained and charged by the security agents. Foroyaa is reliably informed that the duo has been transferred to the Police Headquarters in Banjul in the morning of Wednesday, January 15th instead of being arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates' court. Police Commissioner, Yaya Touray, head of the Prosecutions Unit at the Gambia Police Force on Wednesday 15 January 2014 in his office at the police headquarters in Banjul, told journalists that the charge proffered against Mr. Musa Sheriff, The Voice Editor and Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah, is not from his unit and they are not aware of any charge levelled against the duo.

He said the charge should have emanated from them and not from anyone else. He said wherever a charge would be drawn, it must be based on their decision. He added that in case the accused persons are to be charged a at place that is different from the Police headquarters in Banjul, they should dictate that.
