Nigeria: Falana - Supreme Court Judgment On Abacha Has Rubbished Perpetual Immunity

Popular human rights activist and lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) Sarturday said the Supreme Court judgment, which ordered a retrial for Mohammed, the son of the late military head of state, General Sanni Abacha, has floored the concept of perpetual immunity for any public officer in Nigeria.

In a unanimous decision read Friday by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the apex court had ordered Mohammed to return to the Abuja High Court to face a 123-count charge bordering on possession of properties stolen from the federal government. The court also held that Mohammed should stand trial for holding on to properties allegedly stolen by his father.
