Mozambique: Constitutional Council Criticises Police

Maputo — Mozambique's Constitutional Council, the country's highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law, on Thursday criticized the police for their excessive use of violence during the municipal elections of 20 November.

In giving the Council's declaration of the results, its chairperson, Heremegildo Gamito, declared that in some cases the behaviour of the police, when intervening to maintain order and protect polling station staff, “was excessive and, particularly with regard to the resources used, went beyond the reasonable limits of the need to deal with disturbances”.
