Nairobi — Lucy Mbugua has been confirmed as the Managing Director of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) for a term of three years, effective Friday.
Mbugua was appointed by Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau with recommendations from the KAA Board.
She has been serving in an acting capacity since August 15 last year after the then MD Stephen Gichuki proceeded on leave pending expiry of his term.
Making the announcement, KAA Board chairman Professor Mutuma Mugambi said Mbugua emerged the best from over 50 candidates after an intensive interview process.
"It is with great pleasure that the board of directors and I announce the appointment of Ms Lucy Mbugua as the managing director of KAA for a term of three years effective today. The recruitment process was as per the KAA Act and public service commission guidelines," Mugambi said.
He said the new MD has provided effective leadership at KAA over the last five months and that the board was confident that she is the right candidate to drive the next phase of the expansion and modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and the other airports across the country.
In December last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta presided over the groundbreaking for a 20 million passenger terminal at JKIA which will cater for current and future demand of the facility, which is positioning itself as the gateway into the region.
"Having taken over after the fire at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) that destroyed a section of the International Arrivals Terminal in August 2013, Ms Mbugua has been at the forefront in the recovery and restoration efforts for the facility," Mugambi noted.
Mbugua holds a Masters of Business Administration in Aviation from Moi University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Sales and Marketing from Dayton Ohio, USA and a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of Nairobi. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Strategic Business Management from the Moi University.
Before her elevation to position of Acting Managing Director of KAA, she was the authority's General Manager for Marketing and Business Development. Previously, she has been Head of Marketing and Communications at Kenya Airways.
