My Egyptian friend, the renowned poet-translator and literary scholar Prof Arif Khudairi, sent me a bundle of books: The Abode of Peace (poetry), Tales from the Arabian Sahara (short stories), and the more fascinating title, The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad.
The famous story of Sindbad the Sailor is found among the corpus of tales in The Arabian Nights which have survived the perils of time. These stories, though fairy in their presentation, have a humanistic imperative which can hardly be ignored. They teach us history, geography, diverse cultures, and impart certain morals.
