Kenya: First Community Gets New Islamic Unit Head

First Community Bank Group has appointed Omar Sheikh as the company's new general manager for Islamic Banking. Omar was previously working at Barclays Bank of Kenya as the head of Islamic Banking Division, where he earned credit for founding, growing and heading the La Riba division since its inception in 2005.

After his appointment, he said he will propel FCB's Community Bank in order to attain the untapped segment in the market. "This market was largely locked out of financing before the advent of Islamic banks due to fear of engaging in interest, but with the understanding of banking habits of the community, I will be able to deliver the services," he said.

Omar holds a Bachelors of Education degree from Kenyatta University, a MBA from University of Nairobi and he is also a Certified Islamic Financial Executive from the Dubai based Ethica Institute of Islamic Finance. He has has over 12 years of experience in banking has previously served in several countries, working on Barclays Group PLC Control Review Project.
