Mozambique: Government Denies Granting Lonrho Tuna Rights

Maputo — The Mozambican government has denied stories circulating in the foreign media that it has granted the British multinational Lonrho exclusive rights to fish for tuna in Mozambican waters for the next five years.

Lonrho had announced in September 2012 that its Oceanfresh Seafood Division had been granted exclusive fishing rights for tuna in Mozambique's 12 mile territorial waters and in the 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone. Lonrho added that the Mozambican authorities had set its quota at 12,000 tonnes of tuna a year.
