Liberia: Ellen Under Fire

An opposition politician has sharply reacted to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's recent State of the Nation Address, saying she has "miserable failed the Liberian people."

Both Mr. Simeon Freeman, political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) and Mr. Benjamin Sanvee of the Liberty Party made their reaction yesterday almost simultaneously at different locations. Mr. Freeman said: "This President has miserably failed us as a nation. The only things she could showcase as an empowerment for the past eight years are car washers or petty traders who benefited from a LD$25,000 loan that was given to them. "The President of Liberia has no regard for her citizens and that is unfortunate. Madam Sirleaf needs to get serious with the governance of our country," MPC leader Simeon Freeman told journalists during a press conference at his party headquarters in Congo Town yesterday. In fulfillment of the constitution of Liberia, President Sirleaf recently addressed the joint chambers of the national legislature where she presented her legislative agenda for 2014.
