Mozambique: Govt, Opposition Party Welcome Resumption of Negotiations

1 February 2014

The political dialogue between the Mozambican Government and the largest opposition party, the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) is registering significant progress. On 1 February an extraordinary round not only identified five national figures as observers/mediators for the talks, but also restarted discussions on the electoral package that was the reason for the deadlock at more than 20 rounds of talks.

The five names were not disclosed as the people concerned have to be consulted on their availability for this task. But this makes it clear that Renamo has given up on its demand, always rejected by the government, of having international figures in the talks. Even so, according to Saimone Macuiane, the head of the Renamo delegation, the sides agreed to leave room for national or international citizens or institutions that could make a contribution to the negotiations'! success.
