Gambia: Malaria Cases Dropped Significantly - As Result of Monthly 'Operation Clean the Nation'

The public relations officer (PRO) of Banjul City Council (BCC) has disclosed that preliminary results have confirmed that malaria cases in some areas had significantly dropped by a high percentage, as a result of the monthly 'Operation Clean the Nation' exercise, instituted by His Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh in 2004.

PRO Sandigie Njie last Friday made these remarks, on behalf of the mayor of BCC, Abdoulie Bah at BCC conference hall, as he presided over the opening ceremony of a daylong Anti-Littering Bill sensitisation forum for students. The forum, which is organised by the West Africa Birds Study Association (WABSA), in partnership with the National Environment Agency (NEA), is aimed at sensitising members and communities on the Anti-Littering Bill. He therefore applauded the President of the Republic for initiating such a project, which according to him, will help to prevent many diseases that continue to kill hundreds of of vulnerable citizens who could have been productive in the agriculture, health, education and other sectors. "I therefore call for a holistic approach from all walks of life towards a cleaner city in the realisation of our objectives," he added. PRO Njie urged the students to disseminate the knowledge gained from the forum and to also share it with their colleagues, who do not have the opportunity to be part of this very important forum. PRO Sandigie Njie disclosed that in his capacity as the chairman of the National Environment Management Council, His Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh had on 14th June 2007 passed into law the Anti-Littering Regulations.
