Kenyan High Court Bars Arrest of Central Bank Governor

The Kenyan High Court has blocked the arrest of Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Njuguna Ndung'u, pending a challenge to the allegations against him, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Friday (February 14th).

Justice David Majanja issued the order barring the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), director of public prosecutions and the police from arresting and prosecuting Ndung'u on charges of corruption. Majanja's order will remain in place until an application filed by Ndung'u challenging the charges is heard on March 12th.

The EACC recommended the arrest of a number of senior CBK officials, including Ndung'u, on charges of abuse of office for failing to comply with public procurement regulations and allegedly leading to a loss of 400 million shillings ($4.6 million).

Ndung'u denies the allegations.
