Liberia: 23 Liberian Oil Rig Workers in Singapore

As 2014 oil exploratory drilling campaign gets underway in Liberia, Menergy International Liberia Ltd. the local Agent for Seadrill Mobile Units, has signed contract with 41 young Liberian oil riggers to provide technical and mechanical support services onboard the West Tellus oil drilling rig.

The rig is currently in Singapore bound for Liberia via Southern Africa.

Recently, 23 Liberian rig workers flew to Singapore to undergo capacity building training and ride the rig to the Walvis Bay in Southern Africa. In March, the next batch of 18 Liberian rig workers will travel to Namibia to crew change and ride the rig to Liberia. This group includes one female.

In a brief interview with the Acting Country Director for Menergy International Liberia Ltd., Mr. Bill Montgomery Jr, he said the West Tellus is a 6th generation semi-submersible oil drilling platform equipped with modern electronic gadgets and it was necessary for Liberian rig workers to get familiar with the technology before actual drilling starts.

It is for this reason that the Liberian crew are joining the rig outside Liberia for trainings and capacity building activities and induction to Seadrill operations.

Mr. Montgomery expressed gratitude to Liberian Maritime Authority and Liberia Seafarers Union for their support in facilitating the employment of these Liberians. He said Menergy Int'L Liberia is committed to working with the relevant stakeholders to train as many Liberians as required for offshore work.

He said his company is committed to the local content provision in the draft oil & gas policy and this is why training and capacity building is very paramount to his company.

Mr. Montgomery concluded by saying he is looking forward to oil discovery in commercial quantity as soon as possible and subsequent commencement of oil production in few years. This development will create long term employment for the many Liberians that are building their career in the Oil & Gas Industry.
