Kenya: Washiali Slams Sugar Importers

25 February 2014

A legislator has called on the Inspector General of police to form a special unit to tackle smuggling of sugar into Kenya. Mumias East MP Ben Washiali said the sugar industry is the only crop industry invaded with cartels. He said the cartels bring down sugar industries.

Washiali said a lot of sugar is piling in local millers' stores. "They import cheap sugar from outside the country, repackage in local miller branded bags and sell at cheap prices,"he said. Washiali was speaking on Friday at Khungwani Primary School in South Wanga division during the school's education day.
