Kenya: U.S City to Buy Mangoes From Marakwet

THE US city of Rochester in Minnesota plans to partner with investors in Elgeyo Marakwet county, Deputy Governor Gabriel Lagat has said.

He said once signed, the deal may see local farmers export high quality mangoes to the US. Lagat made the remarks when he met officials from Rochester, Minnesota in his Eldoret office yesterday.

He said the team visited the county on a fact finding mission and to explore new links with the county. Lagat said the intended partnership will end exploitation of farmers by middlemen in the region.

"We are in full support for the partnership which we will definitely benefit farmers," he said. Lagat said the county will identify one of the local towns to enter into a twin city partnership deal with Rochester City.

Minnesota State officials led by Judge Lajune Thomas said they will link farmers in the county with a fruit factory in the US. He said the factory, Cut Fruit Express will send experts to county to discuss the deal further.
