Kenya: Kericho Says No to Cane Shift

SUGARCANE farmers from Kericho county have criticised government plans to shift cane farming from Western to the Coast.

Farmers delivering canes to Soin Sugar Factory in Kericho county and Muhoroni Sugar Factory in Kisumu county said plans to do away with cane farming in Western region will impoverish farmers.

The Kenya National Sugarcane Farmers' Union deputy national chairman Joseph Rotich said they will resist attempts by the national government to effect the changes in the sugar industry.

He said it is wrong for the government to interfere with their source of livelihood. Rotich was speaking to journalists in Kericho town yesterday.
