Liberia: This Problem Must Be Addressed Urgently!

The issue of prolonged detention without trial is becoming prevalent in most if not all of the prison centers throughout the country.

There had been persistent calls by democratic nations, particularly the United States, including pro-democracy and human rights organizations as well as the media for the Government of Liberia (GoL) to address this mistreatment.

Despite the incessant calls, the relevant authorities in government have done little in addressing this ill-treatment. For us, we consider the prolonged detention of inmates without trial as a complete violation of their rights to justice. We think it is about time for the government to exert more efforts in addressing this growing abuse in our country, if it must be more credited for subscribing to the rule of law.

The respect for human rights and other democratic values is vital to the rebuilding of our country following over decade of civil upheaval.

It is our hope that the government will effectively and urgently address this problem for the sustenance of our nascent democracy.
