The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has witnessed many different styles over the past 15 years, but in 2014, it is actively seeking to promote an individual fashion message. For the first time since inception, the CTIJF has partnered with local fashion companies to produce the merchandise that is on sale at the events. It has done so through a partnership struck with the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union, whose remit under ‘Wear South Africa’ it is to encourage the design, making and purchase of locally produced goods.
Festinos (people who attend the CTIJF) are encouraged to raid their wardrobes, hit the streets and make a statement this year by expressing their inner jazz persona by wearing local.
In celebration of this, SACTWU and the CTIJF will also host an intimate fun-filled evening that features up and coming South African fashion designers, and international and local jazz acts – Shakatak, Jimmy Nevis and the Steenberg High School. Entitled, ‘Fashion and all that jazz!’ the evening promises to be a great opportunity for guests to flaunt their inner jazz persona while indulging in a fine feast and rubbing shoulders with the crème of society.
Young designers taking on the challenge of stimulating the local fashion industry will craft garments specifically for the Cape Town Fashion Festival event and will showcase their flair include: Award winning Kim Gush whose striking work explores local resources to help bring her passion for ancient histories, cultures & the human psyche to life, telling stories of her own perception of these subjects through her work; 20 year old, fashion light, Ernest Mahomane, who under Gavin Rajah’s tutelage has emerged as one of the hottest young designers of 2013, will present a refreshing collection that embraces the return of femininity enhanced by his attention to detail with the fine finishing that Rajah is renowned for;
Julia M’Poko, an Elle Magazine Rising Design Star finalist, M’Poko weaves the simplicity and beauty of her African heritage into the magic of her clothes that are at once feminine and polished which she has launched under the brand ‘Julienne’, a family name. Drawing on inspiration from her childhood, she has created a range of fabrics that carry digital prints reminiscent of her African upbringing which she crafts into luxury ready to wear garments.
