Kenya: Airtel Staff in Blood Donation Drive

Over 29 employees of Airtel Kenya donated a total of 21 pints of blood to help save lives at the Mater Hospital.

The blood donation campaign is part of Airtel's voluntary employee social responsibility initiative program in which the company provides support for its employees in support of various causes in the community. Employees constituting of Airtel Kenya's Customer Service Department and Airtel's partner ISON, a firm in call center services took part in the campaign.

In a statement, Airtel Kenya managing director Shivan Bhargava said, "Donating blood makes each one of us a hero and a life savior. It's encouraging to see that our employees appreciate the importance of donating blood to save lives. I thank all blood donors and encourage Airtel employees to continue donating blood on a regular basis, calling upon more staff to join the program." The Blood Donation Coordinator at Mater Hospital Sister Priscilla Ndung'u said that the blood collected from the Airtel and ISON employees will help provide life-saving support to patients at the hospitals. "This collection is significant for us to maintain our minimum stock at our blood bank," said Sister Priscilla. Sister Priscilla further explained that blood donors can give blood every 2 to 3 months as it benefits their health by decreasing blood viscosity. The blood helps in saving sick or urgent patients by supporting the successful completion of complex interventions. Sister Priscilla emphasized that the Hospital constantly needs more donors and volunteers to come forward to ensure Mater hospitals has the supply of blood needed. Airtel sponsors International Youth Cricket

Airtel Kenya last month announced its sponsorship of the 2012 Obuya Youth Cricket tournament starting from August 21st to August 25th, 2012. Airtel Kenya Managing Director Shivan Bhargava reiterated his company's commitment to the promotion of sports in Kenya going on to say that "We are committed to supporting the development of sports in the country and we will be supporting more sporting initiatives aimed at nurturing talent among the youth in Kenya."

Bhargava added that his Company is delighted to have the opportunity to offer cricket fans the opportunity to enjoy their favorite sport while accessing exclusive Airtel customer service and sales points at the games venues. The games will be played at Jaffrey's, Simba Union Club, Premier Club, Ruaraka and Sir Ali Muslims club.

Speaking about the sponsorship, the Chairman of the Obuya tournament Kennedy Obuya expressed his delight at the offer from Airtel appealing to more organizations to join in the promotion of the event to cater for more teams and better quality of the games in the future.
