Gambia: Training On Modern Day Beekeeping Underway

The National Beekeepers Association of the Gambia (NBAG), in collaboration with Professional Beekeepers Association (PBA) last Thursday began a seven-day training of trainers on modern beekeeping. The training was held at the National Beekeepers Association's headquarters in Brikama Nyambai Forest Park of Kombo Central District, West Coast Region.

Funded by Matching Grant Facility (MGF) a sub-component of the World Bank, with funding from the Growth and Competitiveness Programme (GCP) under the Ministry of Trade for supporting and promoting beekeeping in The Gambia. Declaring the training workshop open, on behalf of the Governor of West Coast Region, Mamudou Keita, the record officer, Office of the Governor described beekeeping as a noble profession, noting that it can contribute to the socio-economic development and well-being of the people. According to him, there is an enabling environment created by the government of the day for people to engage in any meaningful activity that they can earn their living. "The gains and benefits that are derived from engaging in beekeeping is quite significant and can help one to attain sustainable living condition," Keita told the participants on behalf of Governor Sanneh. The training, he added, is therefore quite relevant and timely and will indeed go a long way in boosting the living condition of the people, and thereby reducing poverty. The record officer, Office of the Governor called on the youth folk to engage in meaningful economic activity, as it is in line with the PAGE and Millennium Development Goals. He urged participants to adequately share the knowledge gained from the session with others who did not have the opportunity to attend the programme.
