Gambia to Strengthen Surveillance System for Meningitis

The Gambia government through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with support from the World Health Organisation on Tuesday concluded five-day training for medical doctors and senior health workers on Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), designed to enhance surveillance system of the prevalence of meningitis in the country.

The Gambia being among African countries that lie within what is referred to as the 'Meningitis Belt', had in 2013 introduced MenAfrivac to vaccinate the population against the epidemic. Given the foregoing, it was highly recommended that a case based surveillance approach be eventually put in place to facilitate the monitoring of the impact of the vaccine on the epidemiology of the disease.
