Kenya: Kiambu Speaker to Be Elected On Monday, Attracts 25

The Kiambu county assembly speaker's seat has attracted 25 candidates. The assembly members, who are in Mombasa for a retreat, will hold the elections on Monday.

The seat fell vacant after former speaker Nick Ndichu was impeached. Speaking in his office yesterday, majority leader Simon Komu encouraged women to apply for the seat.

"It is up to the members in the House to decide who they want to be their speaker. I encourage women to apply for the position as it will be a free and fair process," he said.

Komu said anyone who meets the qualifications as advertised, irrespective of gender, is eligible to contest. "We welcome anybody who feels they are qualified to be speaker to apply and contest for the seat," he said.
