Kenya: Govt Not Aware of Hemed Whereabouts, Lenku

THE government has said it is not aware of the whereabouts of Hemed Salim. It has defended the police raid on Masjid Musa mosque in Mombasa as justified.

Interior Secretary Joseph Lenku said Hemed may be among youth who escaped from custody when police raided the mosque on February 5. Hundreds of youth who were allegedly receiving teachings on radical Islam were arrested.

Lenku said even though an application has been filed before the High Court in Mombasa that he be produced, Hemed's family is yet to file a report with the police on his disappearance.

"Although it is reasonably believed that Hemed was among the suspects arrested at Masjid Musa, he was among several suspects who escaped," Lenku says in a statement read on his behalf by Senate majority leader Kindiki Kithure.
