Tanzania Set for Global Gas Sector Local Content Summit

A SUMMIT on how local Tanzanians can benefit from the nascent gas sector is planned for Dar es Salaam in July, this year.

The meeting, dubbed Tanzania Local Content Summit, will showcase how stakeholders in the sector can work together to get a reliable supplier base, according to CWC Group's Marketing Manager Ms Joanna Kotyrba.

It has been organised in partnership with the Tanzanian based Smart Spending, and endorsed by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM).

Smart Spending, currently the face of local content in the country, was founded by Ms Neema Lugangira Apson, a supply chain and local-content specialist.

She has been actively involved in providing advisory services to aspiring SMEs and recently completed a detailed action- orientated research titled, "Local Supplier Development in the Tanzania's Proposed LNG Supply Chain," leading to her being internationally and locally known as Tanzania's localcontent specialist.

"Ms Neema Lugangira Apson has in the past urged the country to have a strong local content in the nascent oil and gas industry for its citizens to gain skilled manpower and a competitive supply edge," Ms Kotyrba said.

According to Ms Kotyrba, the strategic gathering would provide a platform for all key stakeholders in the evolving Tanzanian oil and gas industry to meet, including the MEM, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), international operators, service companies and indigenous suppliers.

Ms Kotyrba said the event would address how to collaborate with key stakeholders to take local content through, from policy implementation to project completion, drive local content best practice and ensure maximum benefit for local communities.

It would also assist participants establish supply chain and procurement processes within Tanzania's oil and gas industry, network and discuss local content successes and challenges, and hear lessons learned.

CWC also noted that it would foster partnerships with local, national and international businesses, address the challenges being faced by the government and industry in local content implementation.

It would also feature international case studies with a view to learning valuable lessons from global local content leaders.

The summit would provide an opportunity for the government and industry to meet and discuss the local content expectations of international companies doing business in the country.
