The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members will on Saturday (29 March 2014) gather at Rovers Club in Welkom Free State Province to commemorate TB Day and Compensation awareness campaign. The Theme of the campaign is: "A TB test, treatment and Cure for all and COIDA and ODMWA, Let's make them work".
TB disease is currently the greatest threat ever facing mineworkers in particular mineworkers in the gold mines. TB in the mining industry is 10 times the level the World Health Organisation (WHO) classifies as an emergency.
The mining industry in South Africa is heavily dependent on labour migrants from rural areas and surrounding countries migrating annually between South African mines and Lesotho. Swaziland and Mozambique. The migratory movement of mineworkers, across provincial and national borders, extends the high risk of contracting TB and Multi Drug Resistant-TB to communities surrounding mines and to the communities from which the workers originate and to which they return.
The NUM has for many years now spearheaded a campaign to encourage workers to test and know their status in order to halt the detrimental effect of the TB in the mining industry. The NUM fully backs the Minister of Health 's Dr Aaron Motsoaledi comprehensive response to the pandemic and appeals on all organs of society to rally behind government in the fight against the TB.
The NUM is also worried that there is inadequate financial compensation of mineworkers and ex-mineworkers with TB, silicosis and other occupational respiratory diseases.
NUM Health and Safety Secretary Erick Gcilitshana will deliver a keynote address.
Members of the media are invited at the event scheduled to begin at 09h00 at Rovers Club in Welkom, Free State Province.
