More performers are breaching the natural divide and taking their art to neighbouring countries. Eromo Egbejule reports on how Ghanaian musician, Edem, is attempting a crossover.
On the eve of the first BET freestyle event for Ghanaian rappers in 2010, no one was surprised when news emerged that Ewe emcee, Edem (formerly known as Ayigbe Edem) would be taking the stage too. Alongside hiplife veteran Reggie Rockstone and the phenomenal Sarkodie, he would go on to mesmerize the world with deft wordplay in his own language; just like the latter artiste. It was not a validation of his qualities, but instead a confirmation. Since releasing his debut album, Volta Regime in 2008 with hit singles like Bra Fremi Fremi and You Dey Craze, he has moved on to superstardom in his native Ghana and in neighbouring Togo.
