Tunisia: Marzouki Calls for Converting Tunisian Debts Into Development Programmes

Brussels — Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki called, on Wednesday, the European countries to convert the Tunisian debts into development projects managed by European enterprises.

"Any European country that supports this proposal should step up its exports and have access to new markets," he pointed out to the EU-Africa Summit.

This initiative, he added, will undoubtedly contribute to ease the heavy burdens on Tunisia, double the budget allocated to the underprivileged regions' development and fight against unemployment.

"Tunisia is ready to repay its debts," he specified, pointing out that the country devotes each year, a share of its modest budget to honour its commitments, which is the equivalent of its development budget.

President Marzouki expressed wish that the European countries will contribute to funding new joint project in Tunisia, notably in the renewable energies and technological transfer fields.
