Egypt: Fahmy, Ashton Agree to Deploy EU Mission to Follow Up Presidential Vote

Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton have agreed that the EU will send a mission to follow up the upcoming presidential vote in Egypt.

The move comes at an invitation from the Egyptian government and on the occasion of Ashton's visit to Cairo.

The presidential election is slated for May 26-27.

A joint statement said that the European diplomat welcomed to sign agreements with the High Presidential Election Committee and the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to facilitate the mission of the EU mission without any hindrances all over the country.

The statement stressed that the mission would do its tasks to evaluate the electoral process in an objective and transparent way.
