Tanzania: TANROADS Pledges Major Highway Upgrade

THE Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has said that all major highways in the country will be upgraded to tarmac level by 2018-19.

Tanroads Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Patrick Mfugale, made the announcement on Friday evening when he met with the visiting team from the Association of Southern African National Roads Agency (ASANRA) which was on an excursion.

"By 2018-19 all major highways in the country will be at tarmac level, we are sure come that time all 11,154 kilometres will be upgraded to that level," he said.

He said this year, the government has given them 314bn/- for road maintenance in which 35 kilometres will be covered.

Eng Mfugale also said that they have agreements with contractors which stipulate that the latter be responsible for any effects or damages borne out of poor construction for a period of five years after completion of a project.
